When selecting a wheel, make sure to get the weight capacity needed along with the diameter, width, and axle bore. In some cases, the hub length is critical to a good fit. As with casters, the larger the wheel, the easier the push will be. Pay attention to hard vs soft wheels, propensity to flatten and marking vs non-marking.
Remember that larger diameter equates to ease-of-roll while wider width equates to higher weigth capacity.
Flat Free (also known as semi-pneumatic) are extremely popular wheels. Made to perform like a pneumatic tire, they are filled with a lightweight, microcellular polyurethane foam. They retain the lightweight, bounce and cushion like a pneumatic tire, without the nuisance of air leaks.
Flat free wheels will typically experience temporary flat-spotting even when loaded within the acceptable weight limits. Minor flat spotting may be noticeable immediately, a little more after a few hours, a little more at 24 hours, and not much more after that regardless of time. Flat-spotting is more noticeable in warmer weather. The flat-spotting will roll-out and dissipate after a few minutes of rolling, depending on the size of the standing load and extent of the flat-spotting. This is a normal occurrence of these wheels and is not a product failure. If your application cannot tolerate this temporary condition, another material type may be preferable.
Please note that storing these wheels in areas that are subject to wide temperature fluctuations can destroy the microcellular foam interior.
